On a crisp and chilly autumn stroll,
Hidden amongst the trees,
An almost unbelievable sight
Happened right in from of me.
As I paused to look closely
Amongst the branches of an ancient oak
I thought I saw some tiny homes…
I had to give myself a poke!
Closer towards the golden leaves I went,
My eyes widened with a gaze:
Would you believe it; miniature chimney
Emitting a warm and smoky haze!
I rubbed my eyes in disbelief,
But they truly did not deceive me,
But slumbering in tiny acorn lodges
Were the tiniest creatures I did see!
I looked through a tiny window
Where I saw a beautiful flash of blue
And there right before my eyes
Was the sweetest bluebird in view!
I gasped with amazement
I couldn’t believe this was true
And then I heard a little voice squeak
“Please keep it down will you?”
And there below the bluebird,
Stirred a beautiful shade of red
It was a fluffiest red squirrel
Cosied up inside its bed!
“Please keep it down little one”
It said as it stretched and began to yawn
“I have lots of food to forage for
As soon as it’s the break of dawn”.
“I’m sorry, Mr Squirrel” I replied
“I didn’t mean to wake you.”.
“It’s OK little one” he said
“you’re probably tired too”.
“You must need a place to rest,
There’s an empty acorn there -
Just be sure to keep it tidy
It belongs to Mrs Hare.”
“But I’m far too big to fit inside”
I replied.
“I’m much bigger than that house
To get inside that cosy home
I’d need to be the size of a mouse.”
“That’s simple to take care of”
A beautiful voice did sing.
The bluebird had had woken too
Reciting an incantation
and waving her wings.
A magical gust of wind blew
I was suddenly very small!
The enchantment placed me in the bed
Surrounded by the acorns walls!
“Goodnight” whispered squirrel.
“Sweet dreams” sang Bluebird
“Goodnight everyone” I replied
So sleepily that my words had slurred.
The next morning I woke up
And I was back in my own bed
“Was it all a dream?” I thought
As a scratched my weary head.
I got up and drew the curtains
And embraced beautiful autumn weather,
And to my utter disbelief left on my windowsill was an acorn and blue feather…
